July 24 – October 4, 2009

Don’t miss your chance to see these exclusive exhibits at SFMC+D!
Silver of the Stars, a glamorous exhibition, unites ten world-renowned Scottish celebrities from film, fashion, theatre and music with ten of Scotland’s finest contemporary metalsmiths. Each artist has designed and created innovative drinking vessels chosen by their partnered celebrity based on the theme “A Drink with a Close Friend.”

Participating celebrities include: Nicola Benedetti, Robbie Coltrane, Billy Connolly, Sir Sean Connery, Sir Cameron Mackintosh, Ewan McGregor, Alexander McQueen, Ian Ranking and Sharleen Spiteri.

The Millennium Collection for Bute House features an eclectic collection of contemporary silver created by fifteen of Scotland’s top silversmiths. Originally commissioned to celebrate the founding of the Scottish Parliament, these works are now the official collection of state silver used at the Edinburgh residence of the First Minister of Scotland. Outstanding design and meticulous craftsmanship reflect the individuality of each participating artist.

Fred Ball Enamels is a retrospective of one of the most innovative artists working in the enameling field in the 20th-century, Fred Uhl Ball (1945 – 1985). Viewed as highly unorthodox at the time, his experimental techniques – which include torch firing, metal collage, conscious exploration of fire scale, and use of liquid enamel materials – are admired today by many of the foremost leaders in the field. He is one of the artists credited with transforming enameling from its traditional association with small size and preciousness, to a grand scale consistent with Postwar painting and sculpture.

Michael Brennand-Wood: Vase Attacks | Lynn Christiansen: Maybe Just One More
March 11 to April 19, 2009
Velvet da Vinci – San Francisco, CA USA

Velvet da Vinci Gallery in San Francisco presents “Michael Brennand-Wood: Vase Attacks” and “Maybe Just One More” by Lynn Christiansen. This exhibition opens March 11, with an artists’ reception on Friday, March 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. with a gallery talk by Michael Brennand-Wood at 6:30.

Michael Brennand-Wood: Vase Attacks

UK-based fiber artist Michael Brennand-Wood was inspired by 1950s science fiction movie posters for his new installation, Vase Attacks. Bouquets of machine embroidered flowers and cross-culturally based designs form the vases that explode from the wall more with exuberance than violence. The patterns of color, form and dimension are very decorative but also thought provoking such as where fighter bomber butterflies swarm around a mushroom cloud of plastic toy army men. Combining fiber, plastic, metal, and wood Brennand-Wood pushes the boundaries of contemporary fiber art.

Michael Brennand-Wood exhibits internationally and his work is featured in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto and the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra. Vase Attacks is the largest installation of his work in the US. Brennand-Wood will give a talk about his work at the opening reception.

Lynn Christiansen: Maybe Just One More

Local jeweler Lynn Christiansen has recently assembled a mouth-watering menu of wearable food.

Statement: “Food is my obsession. My heart races, all senses heightened as I stand in a bakery or chocolate shop enveloped by the sublime smells, the exquisite beauty of assorted truffles and pastries, the anticipation of the perfect cupcake. Pure joy!

Food is my obsession. My earliest and my most vivid memories are centered on food. A dropped ice cream cone, a butterscotch candy pulled from my grandfather’s pocket, the ultimate warm cinnamon bun. First comes the memory I can taste… the perfect chocolate cake … then comes the who, where and when.

Food is my obsession. Just one more … one too many.

Food is my obsession. I wear what I eat … both in my body and on my body. To be surrounded by truffles, pastries, ice cream … pure joy!”

Winter

a quietly whispering jewellery and corpus exhibition

PLATINA, ODENGATAN 68, STOCKHOLM

Exhibition runs until January 31, 2009

Artists:

Alidra Alic André de la Porte (denmark), Peter Bauhuis (Germany), Gemma Draper (spain), Iris Eichenberg (the netherlands), Åsa Elmstam (sweden), Gesine Hackenberg (the netherlands), Hanna Hedman (sweden), Manon van Kousvijk (the netherlands), Karen Pontoppidan (Denmark/germany), Anna Rikkinen (finland), Karin Seufert (germany), Monika Strasser (switzerland) and Nelli Tanner (finland).

Winter is the time for thoughtfulness, recovery, lethargy, stillness and close relationships.

With winter comes darkness but lightness, coldness but warm gatherings, moods and ceremonies.

Colours become white and greyish. The days are white and the nights become black.

Winter and Christmas are both characterized by human behaviour. We see it in the demonstration of family relations in the form of various rituals. We also see it in objects that bear a certain colour scale, has some forms, functions and meanings. The use of certain objects become documents of memories. These documents and things play roles that we can not ignore, given how much time and money we spend on them. We could ask ourselves; What objects are best for this winter? What can we, after all, not do without?

The thirteen jewellery and corpus artists in this exhibition are among the most noted craftsmen on the international scene today.

The Gallery 105 ART, participates at the famous exhibition of jewellery: Desideri Preziosi
The event will take place in December and will include among the protagonists Francesca Gabrielli director of the gallery itself, and member of the jury of the event. A chance to admire in a large and sumptuous location the creations of an esteemed goldsmith.
The artist will present her latest collection proposing the personal vision of the theme: “jewel, labyrinth of dreams.”
With a series of performances inspired by natural, roughness and asymmetries Gabrielli reveals her particular propensity for abstract and gestural, never falling in trivial, rhetorical or forcibly extravagant.
