Lark Books seeks images to publish in a juried collection of international studio jewelry titled 500 Diamonds. Each piece must feature a diamond or diamonds. All jewelry formsDiverse designs, materials, and techniques are desired, from the traditional to the avant-garde. We accept high-quality transparencies, slides, and digital images. 500 Diamonds, to be released in the fall of 2008, aims to be an inspiring collection for beginning and professional jewelers, as well as collectors and jewelry enthusiasts. Entries must be postmarked by July 16, 2007. No fee is required.

The Art of Jewelry: Plastic & Resin

Lark Books seeks how-to project designers and images to feature in the gallery section of an upcoming publication, The Art of Jewelry: Plastic & Resin, scheduled for release in Fall 2008.
All jewelry forms
laminating, cold connecting, carving, constructing, thermoforming, molding, inlaying, and textile techniques commercial acrylic sheet and block, plastic resin, manufactured plastic forms, post-consumer or other repurposed plastics, and more. Fabricated metal jewelry with plastic and/or resin as a major component are also welcome. Artists whose work is selected for inclusion in the gallery will receive full acknowledgment within the book, a complimentary copy, and discounts on the purchase of books. Artists retain copyright of their work. Lark accepts high-quality transparencies, slides, and digital images. No entry fee is required. Submissions must be postmarked by August 13, 2007.

Craft in America: Memory, Landscape, Community- a three part PBS series airing 8-11pm May 30th, 2007
Part I – Memory
This 60 minute documentary, the first in the CRAFT IN AMERICA series, takes a personal tour through craft’s history in America beginning with the pioneers of the field. This episode juxtaposes the intimate stories of some of our country’s most prominent craft artists against the larger historical context of craft itself.Part II – Landscape
The second episode focuses on the relationship between the artists and their physical environment. Craft artists depend on their natural environment for both materials and inspiration. This hour will look at the processes through which natural materials become finished works of craft, and what deeper messages may be contained therein.Part III – Community
Throughout time, craft work has been a community activity. This hour will focus on the spiritual connection artists have to their communities through craft making. Some express the ideas, beliefs and desires of their community through their craft objects. Some pay homage to the community by continuing craft traditions that are in danger of being lost. Others actually perform their craft as a community project. The personal stories of gifted artists and passionate newcomers alike reveal the deeply held belief that craft is about more than just the making of an object, it is also about a way of life, a reason for being.Metal artists featured are:

Applications for the 2008 NICHE Awards are now available online at http://www.AmericanCraft.com. Artists can download an application at the newly revamped NICHE Awards web page. Other useful information includes updated rules and guidelines, as well as information about the 2008 NICHE Awards ceremony, special display and finalist notifications.
The NICHE Awards, sponsored by NICHE magazine, celebrate excellence and innovation in American and Canadian craft. Entry deadline for professionals is August 31, 2007; entry deadline for students is September 28, 2007.
Categories include Ceramics, Fiber, Glass, Metal, Wood, Jewelry, Home Furnishings, Goblets, Judaica, Mixed Media, Narrative, Recycled, Teapots and more. New categories include Handmade Beads and Polymer Clay.
Judging is based on three main criteria:
technical excellence, both in surface design and form
market viability
a distinct quality of unique, original and creative thoughtFinalists are invited to display their work in the NICHE Awards exhibit at the February Philadelphia Buyers Market of American Craft, February 15-18, 2008, and will be included in the Winter 2008 issue of NICHE magazine. Winners will be announced at the February 2008 Buyers Market and featured in the Spring 2008 issue of NICHE magazine.

Velvet Da Vinci, San Francisco, CA USAAn exhibition of two Barcelona jewelers and one Japanese sculptor is on view through June 30. Velvet Da Vinci Gallery offers a view of new cutting edge jewelry and small sculptures from bold international artists. Two Barcelona jewelers show influences of both Barcelona and the Mediterranean in their works. Both artists use found objects, precious and non-precious metals, and enamels but with quite different results. The new series of work by Ramon Puig Cuyas, called Imago Mundi (World Views), uses Formica, bone, alabaster, ebony and silver. Silvia Walz’s new work, Luz y Sombra (Light and Shadow), consists of silver, enamel and various other elements such as pearls and coral. Junko Iijima’s work, “Hybridization” combines traditional Japanese teapot forms and contemporary anime with Pop Culture. The installation of bronze sculpture and drawings clearly reflects the confluence of cultures in her Japanese heritage.

In 2001, the New York Times reported that the U.S. Department of Education set aside $400 million to help states develop and administer the tests that the No Child Left Behind Act mandated for children in grades 3 through 8. Among the likely benefactors of the extra funds were the four companies that dominate the testing market .
Do you know that Educational Testing Service (ETS), best known for its administration of the SAT college-entrance exam, won a three-year, $50 million contract in October 2001 to develop and score California’s high-school exit exam?

Jewelry by Artists: The Daphne Farago Collection

Museum of Fine Arts, Boston MA USAThis exhibiton will present highlights from Daphne Farago’s collection of contemporary jewelry, which was given to the MFA in 2006. The collection comprises more than 600 works of jewelry by leading American and European artists, ranging in date from about 1940 to the present, in a wide variety of media and sculptural forms. With this gift, the MFA now holds the most comprehensive collection of twentieth-century studio jewelry ever assembled. The exhibition will include a selection of about 150-200 objects, and will provide a chronological survey of studio jewelry in the 20th century. While demonstrating the breadth of the collection and the variety of artists’ approaches to jewelry-making, the show will also represent key artists in depth, including Alexander Calder, Art Smith, Sam Kramer, Robert Ebendorf, William Harper, Wendy Ramshaw and Mary Lee Hu.
