Teaches you how to pierce & solder metal; show you different surface decoration techniques and take you through the process of finishing your own piece of jewellery. For those makers who have attended courses in the past we will guide you through more advanced techniques and allow you to initiate your own design project with technical support from the tutor.
Our onsite jewellery studios are light and spacious and class sizes are limited to ten makers to ensure adequate one-to-one tuition as well as group demonstrations.

Winter is the time for thoughtfulness, recovery, lethargy, stillness and close relationships.

With winter comes darkness but lightness, coldness but warm gatherings, moods and ceremonies.

Colours become white and greyish. The days are white and the nights become black.

Winter and Christmas are both characterized by human behaviour. We see it in the demonstration of family relations in the form of various rituals. We also see it in objects that bear a certain colour scale, has some forms, functions and meanings. The use of certain objects become documents of memories. These documents and things play roles that we can not ignore, given how much time and money we spend on them. We could ask ourselves; What objects are best for this winter? What can we, after all, not do without?

The thirteen jewellery and corpus artists in this exhibition are among the most noted craftsmen on the international scene today.

The event will take place in December and will include among the protagonists Francesca Gabrielli director of the gallery itself, and member of the jury of the event. A chance to admire in a large and sumptuous location the creations of an esteemed goldsmith.
The artist will present her latest collection proposing the personal vision of the theme: “jewel, labyrinth of dreams.”
With a series of performances inspired by natural, roughness and asymmetries Gabrielli reveals her particular propensity for abstract and gestural, never falling in trivial, rhetorical or forcibly extravagant.

For the fourth time, the 10.000,00-euro prize – so fresh. the jewellery award by Pierre Lang – awaits for extraordinary contemporary jewellery design.
Entry deadline is 22 February 2009.

Invited to apply are jewellery, fashion and product designers living in Europe, as well as students and trainees in their last year of studies who deal intensively with jewellery design.

The award-winner and two further talents chosen from the pool of applicants will be invited to Vienna to publicly present the selected works at the 9 festival for fashion and photography, and a publication will be produced to showcase the work.

so fresh. the jewellery award by Pierre Lang was initiated in 2006 by the Pierre Lang jewellery company and Unit F büro für mode as a way to foster up-and-coming talent and sustainably support the careers of promising jewellery designers. The goal is to seek out refreshing new approaches to jewellery design and to raise awareness amongst the public at large of the myriad forms jewellery can take.

Today, jewellery is more exciting, diverse and personal than ever.
A new generation of jewellery designers is taking a fresh look at the long history of jewellery, or purposefully setting off in completely new directions.

Jewellery has taken on a much higher profile in fashion as well. Hardly a designer can be found who doesn’t send his or her creations down the catwalk accessorized with jewellery. In national and international fashion magazines jewellery has long since become much more than just the icing on the fashion cake. Contemporary jewellery design is providing new inspiration and inventing surprising ways to adorn the body.

Alchemy: A Passion for Jewels – Temple St. Clair 2008

An exquisite look into the art of fine jewelry making, through the eyes of famed designer Temple St. Clair.

A Southern girl with a nomadic spirit and a voracious appetite for history and culture, Temple St. Clair grew up spending summer vacations in Morocco and Bavaria, studied at an international boarding school in Switzerland, and went night diving in Honduras with the son of Jacques Cousteau. In her early twenties, St. Clair landed in Florence, where she completed a master’s in Italian literature. In fact, she had no exposure to jewelry making until her visiting mother bought an ancient coin and asked St. Clair to commission a local goldsmith to make a piece of jewelry around it.

Armed with the coin and a sketch, St. Clair entered the ancient Palazzo dell’Orafo of Florentine goldsmiths, where she first discovered the centuries-old art of fine Italian jewelry making. Inspired by the distinctive craftsmanship, St. Clair continued to work with artisans to bring her designs to life. A new world soon began to open up to her—a world that engaged her multicultural education, vast experiences, and rich curiosity; a world that awarded her with a new identity as “an amateur anthropologist, a hopeless hunter and gatherer, a bit of a wanderer, and a self-made jewelry historian who loves to dream and draw.”

With an artist’s eye for detail and an unwavering esteem for the historic, St. Clair creates one-of-a-kind pieces that combine ancient influences with traditional craftsmanship and contemporary flair.
