A great source for gemstones is Ray Gabriel. He has been supplying gems to jewelry artists since 1975. I know because I ordered from him myself way back then. His wife Hannelore who authored The Jewelry of Nepal is an accomplished goldsmith.

Call for Entries: 500 Silver Jewelry Designs, juried by Talya Baharal, is a 420-page, full color survey of contemporary jewelers prominently featuring silver in their designs. This international collection will be beautifully presented and widely distributed throughout the world.All jewelry forms, such as rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, and brooches are welcome. Materials other than silver, such as stones, other metals, or alternative materials, may be included, but silver must be the focus and should occupy roughly 80% of the piece. All design styles are welcome.
Jewelers whose work is selected for inclusion will receive full acknowledgment within the book, a complimentary copy, and discounts on the future purchase of books. Artists retain copyright to their work. Lark accepts high-quality transparencies, slides, and digital images. No entry fee is required.
Submissions must be postmarked by December 4, 2009.

This year, for the very first time, the group of jewellers working at the Pieces of Eight studio have been exhibiting together. The exhibition was recently held at Sturt Gallery in Mittagong, NSW and has now travelled to Inform Contemporary Jewellery, Christchurch New Zealand where it will open this coming Tues 25th Nov from 5pm. The exhibition comprises various works made by the workshop residents at Melbourne’s Pieces of Eight Gallery; Nina Ellis, Lucy Folk, Rachel Gorman, Melanie Katsalidis, Krista McRae and Suzi Zutic.
The individual methodology of each artist reveals the diversity of their approaches. For Ellis, it is related to the hardy weeds of the Australian landscape; manifested in blackened steel, silver and sprays of colour. Folk, immerses herself in the colour and pleasures that food inspires, creating a range of delights in joyful ways.
Both Gorman and Katsalidis utilise materials in unconventional ways. Gorman employs ceramic, metal and paint to re-create versions of costume jewellery; playful and colourful. While Katsalidis turns to the beautiful nature of organic pearls, particularly black pearls to assert a contemporary vision of modern day glamour.
In the work of McRae and Zutic, a certain romance exists. McRae draws on the sublimeness of shapes; oxidised silver, set with tiny dark blue sapphires that sparkle like stars. Zutic’s ring series (modelled in wax and set with petite gems) have a timeless quality, like they could have been exposed in the uncovering of an ancient roman dig.

“Bend, Mold, Cut, Join: Small Works in Metal” is a national juried exhibition with a concentration on pioneering art jewelry and small scale functional metalwork, such as vessels and implements that combine traditional metalsmithing techniques with a vision representative of the field of contemporary metalsmithing.Hosted by the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts (DCCA) and juried by Ellen Lupton, “Bend, Mold, Cut, Join: Small Works in Metal” is shown in conjunction with the Society of North American Goldsmith’s (SNAG) annual conference Revolution in Philadelphia, PA, on May 20-23, 2009. Works should demonstrate the use of one or more traditional metalsmithing techniques and be wearable and/or functional. There are no restrictions on inspiration, format, or additional materials employed. Artists are encouraged to interpret this broad theme with original and innovative contemporary designs.
This exhibition will be held in the main atrium of the DCCA and in the Alternatives Museum Shop, an elegant retail gallery featuring exquisite handmade wearable and functional crafts by artists from the Mid-Atlantic region and beyond. All metal objects accepted to “Bend, Mold, Cut, Join: Small Works in Metal” must be available for purchase.

The MJSA Vision Awards Design Competition annually recognizes the talent and innovation of designers whose work will have a profound influence on the future of jewelry design. In addition to the overall Professional and Student Awards, the competition features special Distinction Awards that allow us to recognize designers using specific materials or technologies in new and creative ways. The first 10 professional entrants for this challenge will have their $50 entry fees waived, courtesy of Reactive Metals Studio, if their designs incorporate the use of reactive metals. The winner of this challenge will receive a $500 cash prize.All first and second place winners in all categories will receive cash awards of up to $1,000. Their winning entries will be on display for thousands of buyers and exhibitors during the annual MJSA Expo New York, the largest and oldest trade show in the U.S. dedicated to the design and manufacturing of jewelry.
MJSA promotes competition winners through E-newsletters, here on the association website, and through other leading industry publications. Winners will also be featured in an article in MJSA Journal, one of the jewelry industry’s most respected trade publications.

Eligibility
Eligible contestants are independent jewelry designers, company-employed jewelry designers, and students enrolled in an art or design-related program at a college or university. By entering the MJSA Vision Awards Design Competition, winners agree to have their names, photos, and designs used and displayed in conjunction with Expo New York and in any publicity generated by MJSA.Judging
Winners are selected by leading manufacturers, jewelry designers, and other industry experts on the basis of creativity, presentation quality, effective use of materials, wearability, and the design’s perceived manufacturing and marketing potential. MJSA Vision Award judges may reject any entry which, in their opinion, fails to meet competition standards.
