I have been collecting information about jewelry and jewelry artists for almost fifty years. When the internet started, I realized that I could share this information to help others educate themselves and learn more about jewelry and the artists behind it. Metalcyberspace has evolved over the years to include more jewelry artists than ever. It began as my personal library, then was incorporated as part of my Sarantos website which it quickly outgrew to become the entity that it currently is now. Before the website existed, I was an active member of numerous organizations and connected people from the various places to each other. Most jewelers were isolated in their own studios and local communities before social networking existed and were hungry for the contact with others in similar situations. After social networking took over I decided to keep Metalcyberspace around to help organize the chaos of information overload.
Created by independent studio jeweler Susan Sarantos in 1999 Metalcyberspace is a labor of love. The archive in my studio contains over 900 binders (and growing) with information on anything jewelry related which I have collected. Books, magazines and catalogs also take up a huge section of my space.
I've been inspired by many people and would like to mention a few.
Robert Lee Morris - In 1977 while visiting New York with my family, I remember walking by his original ARTWEAR Gallery and seeing the windows and just stopped and said we had to go inside. From that point on every time I went to New York I had to visit ARTWEAR Gallery. It was an exciting place to experience all the art jewelry. In 1988, He gave a talk at FIT to the class I was attending and we have been friends ever since. His contribution to the world of Art Jewelry cannot be emphasized enough.
Phillip Fike - Inspired as well as entertained with
stories at every SNAG conference.
Michael Good - He was one of the first
American metalsmiths published in Aurum Magazine. His technical article on anticlastic raising was included and the issue quickly sold out.
Metalcyberspace is a work in progress. I'm always looking for information about artists,
metalsmithing and places of interest so if I'm missing any of your favorites please email and I'll
add them.
Metamorphosing every day.
Enjoy the site,
ta,
